Introduction

Modern materials and devices achieve their impressive performance by relying on
clever design and a fine balance of micro- and nano-mechanical properties. Arguably,
materials mechanical properties are the major single factor determining performance
of any material or operation of a device.

On the nanometre length scale, yet another very significant physical dimension comes
into play -  temporal (or time domain) properties  of devices or materials. The
examples of high speed physical phenomena on nanoscale range from switching of
magnetic or ferroelectric domains in data storage to relaxation of solid lubricant film on
the hard drive to MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical) / NEMS (nano-electro-mechanical)
systems resonance devices, to diffusion phenomena in cell membranes.

This website is devoted to these fascinating features of nature around us (and inside
us!), as well as to the related physical, chemical and biological phenomena. The topics
here are almost equally divided between  development of novel methodologies for
micro- and nano-scale materials characterization, and development of advanced
    materials themselves.

Characterization methods presented here include (but by no means are limited to)
Scanning Probe Microscopy,  Ultrasonic Force Microscopy, Heterodyne Force
Microscopy, as well as solid state sensors for in-situ measurements of materials
physical properties, and High Throughput Experimentation for Combinatorial Materials
    Discovery.

Materials studied and developed include electronic materials, materials for
biotechnology applications, ceramic and polymer nano-composites, and advanced
functional materials like ferroelectrics and polymers for artificial muscles.

The research presented here was performed in collaboration with the most fascinating
academics and researchers I met on the course of my growth as a scientist. I was
definitely blessed by having exciting interaction (both scientifically and personally ) with
my former and present colleagues and students in US, Europe, Japan and Russia.
